02. Brainstorming
I gathered the research and did empathy mapping and affinity diagramming to identify user pain points.
Brainstorming sessions
The empathy mapping was focused on developing a deeper understanding of teachers and students
With Affinity diagramming, I organized the research with one question in mind.
“What are the pain points teachers and students experience?”
03. UX Improvement
After going through the interviews and my own experience of using the app, I found some problems and strategize solutions to improve user experience.
Problems
❌ Overwhelming emojis
Lack of hierarchy and overwhelming usage of emojis to get users’ attention.
❌ No search function
There is no search function and users need to endlessly browse to find something specific.
❌ Complex UI
Overly complex colors and some texts are too small making it hard to read.
Solutions
💚 Universal Design
Redesign to apply a universal design to tackle cross cultural UI.
💚 Better Navigation
Added search function so that teachers and students can find content or people easier.
💚 Simpler UI
Redesign the journey flow for students and teachers for better user experience.
04. UI Design
I used Open Sans for headers for a modern feel, and Source Sans Pro for body text for readability. I adjusted the color palette to lighter reds with neutrals for a softer tone.
05. Old Screens
Old designs are overwhelmed with emojis and information.
There is also no search function and users have to browse to look for teachers.
Lacked of branding and consistent style.
06. Launched Designs
Teacher's Profile
Map
Added a map with teacher locations and current time, standardized names for easier search, and prioritized reviews at the top. Used red and neutral grey color scheme.
Info & Courses
Teacher introduction and course information were separated for easier scanning. Course details are now expandable for individual viewing.
Availability
The calendar is now displayed with current day and available times, and an arrow indicates next week's availability.
Student's Profile & Browse
Student's Profile
Added student profiles for teachers to browse learning goals, allowing customization.
Redesigned profile layout similar to teachers'. Added privacy option for students to browse anonymously.
Browse
The app's redesign simplified the interface, removing clutter and adding personalized greetings, language options, and a search function. Cards now display essential information, improving user experience and browsing efficiency.
07. Reflection
I truly enjoyed this project, particularly learning about cross-cultural UI and interviewing students and teachers. Interacting with users and understanding their experiences was one of my favorite aspects, as it allowed me to gain valuable insights that directly informed and improved my design decisions.
Given more time, I would prioritize refining the visual design to ensure UI consistency and enhance the finer details within the designs.
